Apart From Opium And Heroin Do Poppies Have Any Value?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Poppies have been used for some thousands of years, particularly the sweet variety. The edible species used in the kitchen is the Common Poppy. Its petals make good herbal infusions and its seeds, sweets. The use of poppies has been recorded as far back 7th century BC.
In Roman times the seeds were roasted and eaten with honey. They were also the chief ingredient in a sweet called pasteli made almost entirely from honey and poppy seeds. Today a similar treat can be found made from sesame seeds. Today poppy seeds are principally used in bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta. The green parts can be cooked and served with rice or meat and can appear in omelettes.
In the past petals were placed in bottles of olive oil until it turned red.
All the species have been used historically for their medicinal value. The opium poppy has long been known as a calmer and sleep inducer.
