From internal evidence, notably, a cryptic reference to the trial of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, "The Scottish Play"!, was probably first performed in1606, around the time that Antony and Cleopatra was written. Raphael Holinshed's massive work, Chronicles, (revised 1587), provided Shakespeare with the story of Macbeth and Duncan, as well as other material. George Buchan's, Rerum Scoticaria Historia,(1582), possibly offered further leads, and Matthew Gwynn's Latin pageant, Tres Sybillae, (performed for James1 in 1605), has been tenuously linked with Macbeth. Only the Folio version (1623) survives. This probably came from a playhouse script, thought to be an adaption by Shakespeare's younger colleague Thomas Middleton.
