Dogs don't "come into season" like salmon! Do some research on the various types of dogs. The American Kennel Club (AKC), and other organizations have lots of information online as to breed characteristics. Then research with your local veterinarians or animal shelters about the various breeds. Many people are finding great dogs through the animal rescue shelters - often, you can get them with shots and neutering for a small fee. Many pet shops buy puppies from "puppy mills." These are breeders who don't pay any attention to the lineage, or - if the puppy comes with papers - the breeding lines may not be good. These people play to your sympathy and the puppy's "cuteness" in order to make lots of money. If you chose to get a puppy through a pet store, I would look for one that belongs to the Better Business Bureau, or that has been approved through a recognized breeding organization. Ask lots of questions - and ask to talk to people who have purchased puppies from them. Any reputable seller of puppies will have a list of clients who will provide references about their experience.
