Yes dogs can have heart disease and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done for them if they do have it. It is something which every dog can develop and it is basically just pot luck as to whether they will or not.
Fluid tends to develop within the body, causing the stomach to bloat out to massive proportions. The vet can remove this fluid but it will come straight back again. Depending on the dog it will determine how long they actually survive. It is always much kinder to put the animal to sleep rather than to have it suffer until they pass away naturally. Heart disease is a horrible condition and for more advice you should consult your vet. However, it is usually pot luck as to whether your dog will develop the condition or not and there is unfortunately nothing that you can do usually to cure the condition.
