Its the battle of the somme, and my grandfather fought and survived it, It is a river that runs through Belgium and france, more British soldiers died in the first day, than in any other war before or since, 56,000 .It is used as a generic term for a horendous loss of life, in a unwinable situation. Trench warfare was defined by the appalling loss of life, in horendous conditrions, waist deep mud, rats, lice, constant shelling and snipers, appalling food, lack of kit, and incesant rain and cold, and all facing a static enemy only 20 yards away, this lasted 4 years,. The trench system streched from the english channel to the Swiss border, hundreds of miles.
