There are various ways that you can use to teach your kid to read and you have to look at the kid to decide about the methods that you can try on him. But there are some fundamental things are common to almost every kid in the world and according to those traits we can suggest you some methods.
First of all you should imbue in yourself some teaching habits and when your kid is constantly looking at you to study then you can expect him also to do the same.
The other aspect you can try is to create a story in which the lead character has succeeded in life because he is an avid reader. The story will inspire him to do what his hero has done and he may start reading.
Above all you should devise your own way according to the kind of kid you have and you just need to try constantly.

There are many programs to teach children to read but basically two methods: look-say (which is where you tell the child what the word is and he repeats it back to you in the hopes he'll recognize it again later) and phonics (which is teaching that each letter has one or more sounds associated with it and putting those sounds together make words). In my experience, some of both works best. Begin by teaching letter sounds with flash cards or rhymes or songs, then simple word families (am, dam, ham, jam, ram, etc.) and build from there. Some kids catch on to it quicker than others. Others figure their own methods out while others take a long time until it dawns on them. It's not hard to teach, just be patient.

I'd choose Hooked on Phonics - it's a great program and will provide your kids a strong base for reading.
