Waterpower was used by people in ancient China and Egypt thousands of years ago. Today, huge concrete dams are built across large rivers, creating reservoirs that ensure a perpetual supply of moving water to turn the hydro- turbines and generators, to produce electrical energy. Cables and electric wires then transmit the electricity to our homes, offices and factories.
In our modern world, we use wide range of electric apparatus, such as electric lamps, kettles, heaters, washing machines etc. many of these are even considered necessities to most people.
Electricity as many advantages over other energy sources like coal, oil and gas. It is inexhaustible as long as there is water in our rivers; it is clean, leaves no residue and is invisible. It is easy to transport, using pylons and wires, and has unlimited industrial applications in all modern fields including processing, telecommunications, entertainment, transportation, commerce and banking.
Many countries build multi purpose dams that not only produce hydro-electricity but also irrigate the surrounding land, help to control floods and improve inland water transportation. Examples of such dams re the Dnieper Dam on the Dneiper River in the CIS, the Aswan Dam on the River Nile in Egypt, the Itaipu Dam on the River Parana on the Paraguay Brazil order.
