This can also be caused by a shoe(s) that are too tight and have been putting pressure on the big toe and that will also cause your toe to callous and get a yellowish color and be thickened skin at the same area. It can take upwards of a year to correct this by wearing loose fitting shoes that allow your foot to expand and contract as they will during the day from swelling and standing all day or even off and on the feet activities. It can also be part of peripheral neuropathy brought on by diabetes. If you have diabetes it is extremely important to get it checked as you can lose your toe to diabetes complications. A toenail that is ingrown will also put pressure on the toe and can cause numbness. There are other things that can cause this including a bunion. You should definitely get it checked by an M.D. To see what they think and then if they feel it needs to be addressed by someone more knowledgeble in the field of pediatry then they will more than likely give you a referral. If you are really worried and they do not give a referral then ask. Also get referrals from your insurance provider and your local hospital. Good luck.

Yes, I realise this post is old, but I happened upon it and maybe the info can be of use to someone else who, also, happens upon it for and answer.

I went for an emg (nerve conduction test) on my back and I mentioned my big toe on my right side was numb (no pins & needles) & just felt funny to the touch and he told me that there are nerves in the toe that are connected to the back. He also told me it could be a sign of nerve damage. I've always had issues with my back so that would make sense. I have yet to do anything about it to see if there is in fact nerve damage. Hope this helps. Jenna

A numb big toe can either be a symptom of a fracture or a nerve compression. That would depend on where the numbness is. If it is anywhere close to your bone, and you find it extremely difficult to even move your foot, chances are that it could be a fracture where your toe is severely damaged. If you can walk but a little pain persists every time you take one step then it could be a hairline fracture. It could also be a tendon tear; although the occurrence of these is very rare. What you can also do it wait for a while to check if the symptoms persist. If they do, then get an X-ray to ascertain the cause of the numbness. Your physician may also ask you to get an MRI done one you have finished with the X-Ray.

I'm not in the greatest shape (25 year old, male), and I was sitting for a stretch of time and noticed my big toes both went numb. The left more so than the right. I noticed the left also had less color than the right. I tried massaging, I checked to see if the nail was ingrown... Nothing. Then I ran on the treadmill for about 10 minutes. During the run I noticed the toes were still numb, but shortly thereafter they regained feeling and I regained color in the left toe, which might indicate a circulation issue.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but it's a clear indication to myself that I need to put some more miles on the treadmill.

There are times when my big toe goes numb. It doesn't have the typical pins and needles feeling to it and parts of it looks yellowish (not fleshy pink). After extensive massaging it, it will turn pink again and the feeling will return. What would that cause this?

This problem can be due to problems with the nerves supplying toe area. Nerves can be damaged or trapped. A visit to doctor will be more helpful.

Just thought I'd mention that some medications can cause numbness.  I began to feel tingling in my big toes after taking an antibiotic for a sinus infection.  I was worried that the tingling was something serious, but I researched side effects of the drug and saw that tingling in the feet/hands was one of them.   As soon as I finished the medication, the tingling stopped.

Same thing happening here. My big toe has been numb for about a day, and it's bugging me! I think it could be something to do with diabetes, but I'm not sure. I'm kind of scared to go to a doctor, I don't know why I am, I just am.

I have a big toe numbness on my right foot. It started when I was 7 months pregnant. I did not mind it since I thought it will go away after I deliver my baby. My baby is already two months old but the numbness on my big toe remains. I forgot to ask my OBGYN about this. Maybe I'll give her a call this week.
