The Vikings (the word refers to the activity of raiding rather than nationality) raided areas of England, Wales and the Isle of Man regularly from the 8th century onwards. Their reign began with an attack on Lindisfarne in the north in 793, and after a number of other raids they began to settle, attacking settlements in many areas, especially the north. After a series of battles against forces led by King Alfred, in 878 the Vikings were granted the territory known as the Danelaw. This territory was created by drawing a line across the map of England from London to Merseyside. The Danes now controlled the land north and east of this line; their capital city was York, in the north-east. The south and west belonged to the Saxon kings.
