What Are Some Of The More Interesting Facts About Ants?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Ants are a fascinating species of insect that live in large colonies. Ant colonies can have as many as one million members.

Leaf cutter ants do not eat the leaves they collect. They cover them with fungus and suck up the nutrients released as the fungus digests the tough plant material.
Ants communicate with each other mainly by scent.

Some ants are ferocious. Several species have stings that connect to poison glands and many ants have glands in their abdomens that release strong-smelling acids. Wood ants go out hunting in groups and attack large caterpillars. They give the victim many bites and inject it with poison before carrying the body back to the nest. Amazon ants raid the nests of other ants, killing the adults and stealing the eggs and larvae. Once these develop in the Amazon's nest, the 'stolen' ants become slaves to look after the Amazon ant eggs and larvae.
