Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) the well known polar explorer who participated in several expeditions to explore the continent of Antarctica hailed from Ireland; he led the Nimrod Expedition (1907-09) with the objective of reaching the South Pole and later arranged the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition better known as the Endurance Expedition (1914-16) which attempted to cross the entire continent from the Ross Sea to the Wedell Sea.

Shackleton received several awards and honors during his lifetime and was knighted in 1909 after returning from the Nimrod Expedition. Shackleton exploits during the Endurance expedition became known world wide when he after the expedition ship cracked due to ice, crossed a distance of 800 miles from Elephant Island where the expedition was stranded to South Georgia in a life boat to seek help.

Shackleton's final expedition was the Shackleton-Rowett expedition which intended to circumnavigate the continent; the expedition could not be completed due to Shackleton's death from a heart attack.
