In the 1990's there was a backlash against the uniformity of housing that characterised the twentieth century so far. Developers responded by making more effort to fit a number of obviously different styles within estates and use different materials such as brick, stone and render. Many of these designs were pastiches of previous designs, echoing back to country houses of the Georgian and Victorian period.
The estate layouts were also different, traffic calming measures such as speed humps being designed in, along with central greens and amenity areas to introduce a village feel. Double glazed window units were now available in more styles and larger units, and were also now demanded by house construction regulations (along with other energy efficient features), so it was now possible to use windows that resembled older styles. Vernacular differences in style began to reappear around the United Kingdom as local planning authorities demanded that new build fitted in with the surrounding areas, though critics complained that this has stifled design innovation and increased the tendency toward pastiche.
