You would use a magnet to remove the iron filings from the sand. Iron is a ferrous (magnetic) metal and sand is non ferrous. (Other than Black Sand).

I did this today you put the sand and iron filling on newspaper put your magnet in a bag and put it over the iron filing and than take the magnet out of the bag and then all the iron filing will fall of leaving two groups ( sand and Iron filing ) :) p.s not sure about the properties 1 might be that is is magnetic :) cheers
