Who Is Anchee Min?

Anchee Min is a contemporary female Chinese author who now lives in America. As a child, Anchee Min became a model member of the Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution. When she was seventeen years of age, she worked in the harsh conditions of a re-education farm until being removed by Madame Mao.

Anchee Min then became involved in the Chinese propaganda film industry, starring in several films. She was punished for her part in this after the death of Chairman Mao and the execution of his wife in 1983 by being publicly denounced and disgraced. This triggered her move to America which she made her home.

Anchee Min is considered a brave female Chinese writer. China actually used her as an example of what Chinese women can achieve when she toured her home country promoting her book Red Azalea. Her works include Becoming Madame Mao, Empress Orchid, and Katherine. Her themes are often around the terror and fear of the Cultural Revolution. She is also a painter, photographer and musician.
