    The Clangers was a popular animated children's television program that appeared on the BBC from November 1969 to October 1974 with in all 26 episodes being broadcast. The serial was centered on a group of creatures living on a faraway planet and inhabiting burrows covered by metal dustbin lids to protect from meteorite impacts the title being taken from the sound these lids made when they were closed.

    The Clangers was created by Smallfilms a joint venture set up by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin; Postgate was the writer of each episodes along with being the narrator while Firmin took care of the animation and illustration part.

    The series was well known for its music and sound effects composed by Vernon Elliot with the whistling sounds by which the Clangers communicated with each other becoming especially popular; a compilation of the original music selected by Johnny Trunk was released in 2001.
