Is Using The Word ‘disrespecting’ As In “he Is Disrespecting Her” Correct Usage Of The Word? Is The Word ‘disrespecting’ Actually A Word?

Part of the problem facing Sen. Obama is how to deal with his opponent for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in the coming election. In stating the issue, a journalist wrote: “If he moves too aggressively to start his general-election bid, he risks looking like he's disrespecting Clinton and her voters.” Is this writer’s use of the word correct? The verb disrespect is to show a lack of respect for … somehow I have a problem with the addition of the suffix ‘ing’ and feel it is incorrect. Correct me if I’m wrong.
