It was named the Sunday River Plantation, because it was the home of "Sunday River". North Ireland was known as Newry earlier. The early settlers from North Ireland came and renamed "Sunday River Plantation" as "Newry". According to the census recorded in the year 2000, the population residing in Newry is about three hundred and forty five (345).  During winter the population rises as it is a very good skiing spot.
