"Les Miserables" was written by French author Victor Hugo. It was first published in two volumes in early 1862. Hugo was considered one of France's premier poets at the time and this novel was unexpected, highly acclaimed, and controversial. It has been adapted to more than forty films between 1907 and 2008 and has been extremely successful as a stage production winning numerous Tony Awards.
