My Cat Is 7 And Had Perineal Urethrostomy Surgery. He Returned To The Vet And Is On Antibiotics, Tummy Meds., And IV. He Drinks Water But Not Eating. He Sniffs Food And Gags. When Given Liquid Food Throws It Up?

My 7 yr old cat is sick and will not eat. He is loosing weight and has been to the vet. He had stones so they did a perineal urethrostomy. Upon his return home he would not eat and drinks little. He throws up liquid food I was injecting into his mouth and gags when he smells anything but water. Hes on an IV to keep him from dehydrating every other day. I am looking for an over the counter medicine to try. I would hate to bring him back to the vet. And my wallet can't handle anymore.

Gagging and drooling can be a sign of nausea-this will lead a cat to not want to eat.  Pain may also be causing anorexia in your cat.
To treat nausea and encourage appetite you can try Pepcid at a dose of 0.5 milligram per kilogram of body weight by mouth twice daily.
Your veterinarian probably gave you pain medication for the postoperative period; if you are out I would contact your veterinarian for a refill.  Appropriate pain control makes a big difference in the postoperative period.
Human over the counter pain medication in cats should not be used without consulting your veterinarian.  If your cat is not on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory you can start a low dose of aspirin at 5 milligram per kilogram of body weight by mouth once daily for no more than 3 days.

It will take time for him to eat but keep the food down and try giving him wet food also it might encourage him to eat but it is very important to keep him drinking water try giving him a little bit of watered down milk that will keep him vitamin intake up.
