the use of color and mirrors, light weight fabrics (esp window treatments) that allow in the light and patterns that are light and airy can help, you may need to rearrange the furniture til you get a look that works, avoid placing the back of a chair or esp sofa in front of the door, that is kind of unwelcoming.
