What Is Ammonification?

Ammonification is defined as the process which is used to generate ammonia as an end product. Ammonification may occur through several inorganic reactions such as metabolism, whereas, it may also occur organically by binding the nitrogen into the dead biomass. Ammonification is an important feature of nitrogen cycle existing in the eco system – if ammonification is not there, the organic form of nitrogen would amass in large quantities, hence hamper the health of the eco system. As because the growing plants require inorganic form of nitrogen, so through ammonification a balance should be employed by virtue of oxidation of organic nitrogen of dead biomass in order to maintain the homeostasis in the eco system. Hence, oxidation is a condition in which ammonification occurs and it is virtually carried out by all the organisms in the eco system. The example of one of the most elementary ammonification is the oxidation of urea to form ammonia in the presence of microbial enzymes.
