Bartolomed de Las Casas born on August 24th, 1484, was a well known 16th century Spanish Dominican priest, and the initial resident Bishop of Chiapas. Prior to becoming a priest Las Casas was a Spanish colonist.

As a colonizer of the New World, he was stirred up by seeing the suffering and genocide of the Native Americans done by the Spanish explorers. He has been inducted as a messenger in the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Da las Casas became popular for promoting the rights of the Indigenous individuals of the Americas, whose traditions he illustrated with immense care. His depiction of the caciques, bohiques, ni-tainos and the naborias in the Caribbean clearly demonstrated a feudal structure.
