How Do I Replace The "Machines" On My Acoustic Guitar?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The machines are tuning machines that help you wind the strings into place on the head of the guitar.

The purpose of these pegs is to hold the strings tight.  They also are adjustable.  All you have to do is twist the peg that points out toward the side.  That changes the pitch of the string, making it higher or lower as the string gets tighter or looser, respectively.

The tuning pegs are fairly easy to replace.  You can purchase them online at E-Bay or a music store.  Just run a search for "tuning machines" or "Tuning Pegs."

Sometimes the pegs are too wide for the holes in the head of the guitar.  Then you have to take a drill and bore a larger hole.  This is a little bit more time-consuming.

The pegs should turn smoothly; the gear inside should twist smoothly and not stick.
