Who Developed The Metric Method Of Measurements And Units And What Led Him/her To This Standard?

Most of the civilized world uses the metric system for measuring nearly everything (except the US, and that shouldn't surprise anyone). When was this system developed and by whom? What was the basis for this all-encompassing method for measurement?

It's a fascinating story - while the idea goes back to the 17th century, and the word metric itself is based on the ancient Greek word for measure, the system was developed in France in the Revolution, as part of the drive to change and modernise the country (I think it was around this time that they tried changing the names of the months too.) The metric system was developed over about a decade, mainly under the supervision of Talleyrand, and became law in 1799. Some of these details i got from this very interesting article.

Beautiful and exact. Thank you. Of course, being an American living in Australia I find having a background in the inch-pound way of thinking can be detrimental at times ... but I'm learning the value of simply shifting the decimal point. Oh, those French folks have more going for them than just good wine, tasty cheese and the invention of love.
