ONe reason may be that you are watching a station that is broadcasting in the "old" 4:3 aspect ratio and not the "new" 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio of HDTV. Most HDTVs offer a function to stretch this picture to fit the screen. If this is the case, consult your TV manual.
