The easiest way is to use an atlas or a road map. On each page of an atlas you'll find the scale bar at the bottom. This bar lets you know how far in miles and kilometres a length is on the map. If you wanted to find the distance between two places, 'as the crow flies', then you could use a ruler or a piece of string.

If you wanted to calculate the indirect distance, for instance following roads, you can run the string along your route and then measure the string against the scale.

Many online maps now have easy to use distance measurement tools. On some you can see the distance between each of your plotted waypoints and how long it would take to travel along them.
