Well, in the "War of 1812" a lot of Washington was burned, including the White House. Before it was burned, it was ransacked by the British Troops, so I would suggest they temporarily "took it over" before escaping and letting it burn.

Though the very first time the newly constructed "President's House" was nearly destroyed was by the foraging British troops in the midst of the War of 1812. The first President to reside in the Executive Mansion, had the distinction of having his wife, Dolly save the portrait of the the first and revered President!
The most recent and maybe the most damning, is the "War of Ignorance"being raged by the current White House occupant, who in fact is eroding the very fibers of our Nation's being! Bush/Cheney have 'gutted' the principles which are the corner stones and all the foundation stones as well, on which are common government was once squarely set. America is drifting away from it's moorings at the exact time nuclear bombs may be come the grenades of choice!
