My Doctor Says I Have A Skin Condition Called Pompholyx. What Is It? How Is It Treated?

Pompholyx, also known as Dyshidrotic eczema or dyshidrotic dermatitis, is a skin rash that appears on the hands and feet. It is characterized by itchy and fluid-filled red vesicles which appear on the skin ~ hence the name pompholyx which means bubble. Its cause is unknown but potential causative factors are believed to include bacterial infection, allergic reaction, and emotional stress.
The rash can be a one-off or can be recurrent, and usually disappears spontaneously within 1-3 weeks. Steroids are sometimes used to treat the ailment. Ultra-Violet light therapy is also common, and, in some cases, immunosuppressant drugs will also be employed. If it is believed that emotional factors are causing or aggravating the condition, identifying and eliminating the sources of stress can be an important part of the healing process.
