What Is Advent?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Advent is a season which begins on the nearest Sunday to 1st December. It marks the 25 days that lead up to Christmas Day and is known as a time of preparation for the festivities. Many families buy their children advert calendars so they can count down the days to Christmas by opening a door each day to reveal either a picture or a small chocolate. Families also put advert wreaths in their house.

For Christians, however, Advent has a deeper significance. Not only to Christians prepare for the birth of Christ at Christmas, they also prepare themselves spiritually for the second coming of Jesus, their Lord and Saviour. Christians believe that Christ will come on earth again in his glory at the end of time. Advent is a time of "waiting", not only for Christmas, but also for their final destiny which they hope will be everlasting happiness with their Maker.
