Nanotechnology refers to a huge range of activities that are at a nano level. Nano in the sphere of science is used to refer to something as if it meant the one billionth. For instance a nano second is one billionth of a second. Nanometres are approximately one billionth of a meter and they measure around ten meters across. Nanotechnology refers to technology at this nanometre level. An analogy that can best describe nanotechnology being used in the manufacture of materials as compared to contemporary manufacturing procedures is the putting together of Lego blocks with bare hands instead of after putting on boxing gloves. Current manufacturing techniques are way too primitive as compared to nanotechnology that will be seen in the future. Materials will soon be manipulated at the nano level where their physical properties greatly differ from their macro level properties.
