Normally preferences are given to children who stay in the vicinity of the school and the surrounding area and as such there is a good chance of your twins getting in to the school of your choice. Most schools also review past academic performances before admitting a fresh student; the admission form also in most cases includes a priority list of secondary schools where one has to be careful about as most schools give more preference to students who have given a first priority to the school. In all there are three to six options of secondary schools to be listed.
Often final dates for the filling in and submission of application forms are given and one should submit the forms before the due date which is generally October 21 in most places. Today some schools offer an online admission option which saves parents quite a bit of time from the otherwise tedious admission process. Some schools also give a first preference to children whose siblings are already attending the school and who live in the surrounding areas.

If you live within the catchment area of a good school, and that school accepts pupils according to where they live, you chances are better than those of someone who lives outside the catchment area.
However, bear in mind, some schools do not necessarily work on this system, but on examination entry and fees; check before you move!
