What Is The Mass Number?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    Mass number is also known as atomic mass number or nucleon number. Mass number is equal to the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom. Mass number of all of the atoms in an element is same but different isotopes of an element can have different mass numbers. The reason is that isotopes have different number of neutrons therefore, mass number of isotopes can vary. Mass number is calculated as the sum of neutrons and atomic number.

    N = A - Z

    A = N + Z

    Where, A = mass number, N = number of neutrons and Z = atomic number
