Should I Add Bonemeal To My Dog's Diet?

Bonemeal is a natural source of calcium.  The amount in commercial dog food is miniscule and adding any source of calcium is a good thing. They have bonemeal tablets for dogs and powder.

Commercial dog food is ok with some brands better than others. The baking of the mixture to cook it at very high heat and then cut it into pieces  removes many vitamins especially vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid and vitamin E, also called tocopherol or mixed tocopherols.

You must replace what the processing takes out.  I add Linatone for dogs or Icelandic Salmon oil  to replace E and other essential elements for good skin and coat.

I add the bonemeal for calcium and other minerals for good muscle tone and heart rhythm.

I give a good multivitamin for extra insurance.  Pet Tabs are beef flavored and have just a little bit of everything in them.

Commerical processed food is ok if you supplement.  

If you really have the time, money and ambition cooking for your dog is the way to go and that is a whole discussion in and of itself.

Not unless your dog is on a home prepared diet. Excess calcium can cause problems of its own.

Bonemeal is basically used in dog food in order to provide dogs with vitamins and minerals. It is made of crushed and coarsely fined bones and it can also be used as a garden fertiliser. Now, if you feed your dog a good, dry dog food, it is likely that you do not need to add anything else, even bonemeal, into it. This is because dry food usually has everything that the dog needs and whilst it may be a little boring, it does already have the right amount of vitamins and minerals in it. So, if you do want to add something a little extra to your dog's dry food, just add a little meat every now and again.

If on the other hand you feed your dog a tinned food, it may be advisable to add bonemeal. Overall though a good dry food mixed with various vegetables is often the best, healthy diet that a dog can have.
