Salamanders are a strange group of creatures and one type of water based salamanders that live in caves in the dark is called the see through salamander. Its skin is ghostly white or slightly pink and is almost transparent. The shape of the internal organs underneath can be clearly seen.
The see through salamander is adapted to live in almost permanent darkness and, as a result, has also almost lost its sight and its eyes.
Another salamander that is also used to living in the dark is the grotto salamander that lives in the central USA. In its larval phase it lives an outdoor life in the mountain brooks and springs. It has a pigmented skin that is a brownish purple and that has yellow flecks. It also has well developed eyes. In the second phase of its life, the grotto salamander starts to live up to its name and moves to underground waters of caves and grottos. It loses is colouring and its eyes regress, leaving it almost blind.
