Vietnam war was between North & South Vietnam in which USA helped South Vietnam to save them from communism.
The war was about the re-establishment of the Vietnamese nation after the experience of French colonial occupation for 80 years. The US from 1954-75 created and tried to maintain a separate client state called Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), but was totally defeated, and in 1976 the country was reunified under the control of Hanoi.
