The Chihuahua We Rescued From The Shelter Has Severe Separation Anxiety. She's About 2 Or 3 They Say. What Can We Do To Help Her Get Over This? She Is Destroying Things In The House.

If I'm anywhere in the house our Chihuahua is fine. She has 2 other Chihuahuas to play with, and she gets along really well with them. If I leave the house, and it doesn't matter if it's 15 minutes or 3 hours, she ruins things. She is currently working on chewing up both arms on our recliner. We have tried a couple of different things and they just don't work. We love the dog and have no plans for getting rid of her, but it is getting pretty expensive replacing things. Please help. Thanks..

      Try this desensitization excersize:
Leave the house for varying times, two minutes to ten minutes, five or six times a day. Don't make a big deal about leaving or coming back (ever). When dog is calm, (not before) call her to you & give plenty affirmation (treats, pets, praise any or all three. Try it out for four weeks. You may not get the whole re-union dance, but your little pal won't be so freaked out by departures and absences; she will learn
      A) it's no big deal, happens all the time and
      B) that you ARE indeed, coming back.
Good luck, tell us how it goes!
