Is It Possible For A Foreigner To Travel To North Korea?

Answer Question

While it is possible for citizens of western countries to travel to North Korea, it will not be the easiest trip to organize, nor will it be the cheapest. The only way to visit North Korea is under the guidance and supervision of a tour guide, booked through a small handful of licensed tour operators, such as "Koryo Tours," which often have offices in Beijing.

The travel agencies generally assist clients in obtaining tourist visas for the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (DPRK) and most tourists start their journey in Beijing, from where they fly to Pyongyang as part of a tour group. Upon arrival in the DPRK, North Korean tour guides will accompany the group at all times. It is important to keep in mind that visitors are not permitted to leave their hotel unsupervised and that they will be very much restricted in their interaction with the locals.

Only a few thousand western tourists visit the DPRK each year and perhaps this is one reason why a trip can be rather expensive. For example, in 2007  seven nights hotel accommodation and the airfare from Beijing to Pyongyang can cost up to 1990 Euros.
