    The town and civil parish of Westhoughton is located in Greater Manchester, England. Historically it is a part of Lancashire; it was a mining and textile manufacturing town located between Bolton and Wigan. The census in the year 2001 declared the population of the town to be 23,056.

    It was an urban district until the year 1974 and had considerable independence from Lancashire, its administrative county. And later it became a town.

    Westhoughton comprise of many villages and each of them has its distinct character and tradition.

    Locally the town is called as the cow's head but the origin of the name is still debated and various explanations are offered by various people. The most widely known explanation is when a cow hit a gate and it had to be decapitated and since then term came into existence.
