Avoid anything with Microsoft Vista. People I know say it has a lot of problems, one even took his computer back for refund. If you have to run Windows, stick with XP.
But if you want a reliable operating system, go with Apple OSX. Apple computers are a bit more money, but in the long run they're worth it. You won't have to worry about viruses and there's no need to slow them down with antivirus software.
There is a way to run Windows programs on Intel based Macs if you need to. I have some programs that only run under Windows, so I run them using Vmware Fusion and Windows XP, but inside of OSX. This way, you can get the best of both worlds.
