Our home is 50+ years old. We have 4 inch square tile in the bathrooms. One of our neighbors had his tile floors redone (paint?) and it looks very nice. What kind of paint is best for this?

Are you sure they were painted and not epoxy coated? There really isn't a paint that stands up to foot traffic, but there is a coating that is 2 part and goes on about a 1/4" thick that can be colored and textured. The best bet is to take the old up and replace it with something you like, there is no telling what lurks under a 50+ year old bathroom floor.
