Speed cameras emit a radar beam across the road. The radar beams emitted by a speed camera are of a super high frequency. Every road has a pre-set maximum speed limit. Crossing this permitted limit amounts to a violation of the rules concerning the speed limit, and results in a penalty which is payable by the errant driver to the traffic police officer on duty.

The speed camera automatically takes a photograph of the vehicle which has violated the speed rule. It is fitted with the sophisticated mechanism that can measure the speed at which every vehicle on the road is travelling, irrespective of the direction in which it is travelling.

The photograph taken by the speed camera is printed with the day, date, time, place, location code, the minimum speed limit stipulated for the area (which is conveniently put up on prominent signboards located at a distance of every few hundred metres) and the speed at which the vehicle was travelling.
