The words "Cows come home" constitute a phrase that is used in the English language to denote a very long period of time. It can also be used to refer to some event that will never come to pass. Examples of its use are "the team will win when the cows come home" or "they can argue about this till the cows come home". Other phrases that are similar to this one are "when pigs will fly" or "when hell freezes over". Both of these are events that cannot come to pass. Of course pigs may be able to fly with enough genetic research and for Vikings hell is already frozen.

Basically the phrase is used when the futility or uselessness of something is being defined or expressed. The passage of a lot of time may or may not result in a satisfactory conclusion.
