    Chisinau is the capital city of Moldova and has a population of 648,000. Chisinau, formerly called Kishinev, is located in central Moldova, on the banks of the river Bîc. The city is divided into five boroughs, or districts, namely Centru, which is Chisinau's downtown, Riscani, to the north, Botanica, to the south, Ciocana to the east and Buiucani, which lies to the northwest.

    Chisinau is diverse city, with a number of language and ethnic groups represented in the population. Moldovans form the majority, comprising 68% of the population, with 14% of Chisinau's residents being Russians, 8% Ukrainians, 5% Romanians and 1% Bulgarians.

    Chisinau's main source of revenue is based on industry, especially the production of machinery and products used in construction.

    Chisinau is served by an international airport, offering flights to Bucharest, Istanbul, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Budapest, Paris, Kiev, Vienna and Larnaca. Flag carriers such as Air Moldova and Moldavian Airlines have hubs at the airport, while Romania's TAROM and Austrian Airlines operate regular flights from Chisinau.
