The easiest answer would be simply any hand in which you are beaten by a better hand, especially when playing for money! However, the poker world has a language of its own, and ´bad beat´ is a term that any novice should be familiar with.

A bad beat will usually occur on the river´ (the last betting round in a game of Texas Hold Ém). Consider the scenario: your opponent will need just one card to complete his or her card, losing if that card does not appear. If that card does not arrive then you are guaranteed to win. .The odds of such a card ´hitting´ are less than 2%, which means that you are a 98% favourite to win – that's a bad beat!

In addition, most casinos and online gaming companies offer a bad beat promotion: hold a hand upwards of four jacks (or thereabouts) and still lose and they will consider that a bad beat and pay out a jackpot prize… helps soothe the pain, I suppose!
