Bar work - whether its in a pub, restaurant, hotel, venue etc - can be really rewarding and fun work. Many people work in a bar at least once in their lives, most of us experiencing it while we're students. I have known many people who, while working as students, decided that hospitality was the career path they'd like to take.

One of the best points is that you meet people and if you're a sociable person yourself that's a bonus.
If you live in the UK or Ireland one good thing is that smoking will be a thing of the past everywhere very soon when England joins the rest in banning smoking in enclosed public places. No longer is a smokey environment a problem.
For anyone wanting to run their own business in the hotel or hospitality industry , bar work is a good foundation level. It's also a good training for students who want to go on to train in hotel or catering management.
The hours are unsociable but this can be an advantage for anyone wanting a second or evening job and this is ideal for parents if one of them wants an evening job.
Many bar jobs are seasonal and there's the chance to work in some lovely areas over the spring and summer.
New friends can be made and new places visited.
If you like people, don't mind long, often unsociable hours and learning new skills it's the job for you.
