How Did The USA Get Involved With WW2?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

I believe Winston Churchill wanted to bring the USA for some time, but there was a strong isolationist  movement in the USA which felt there was no reason why their young men should risk their lives for the continent of Europe.

What really brought the USA in, as I understand it, was the Japanese pre-emptive attack on Pearl Harbour.  The Japs were afraid the US would eventually join in on the side of the allies and decided to destroy their navy in the hope that would deter them, or at least mean the US would enter the war severely weakened.  The attack galvanized the USA as everybody realised if Europe was threatened and conquered, then the US would be next.
