Industrial revolution was the major factor behind the rapid growth of Swindon. It started with the advent of two trade routes that were there because of the construction of Wiltshire and Berkshire canal in the year 1819 and North Wiltshire Canal in 1819.

The year 1840 is quite significant in the history of Swindon as it got the opportunity to house Swindon Railway Works. The works played a significant role as its location was at a point where engines required to be changed. The proposed line to Gloucester also had a junction at Swindon.

The area that is called the New Town these days was originally housing the railway workers who were working in the railway works. You can still see the original houses of that era, although most of them are vacant. The part of the old works now houses the steam railway museum.
