The Phantom of the Opera also known as Le Fantôme de l'Opéra in French is basically a French novel. This novel was written by Gaston Leroux. This novel was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. This novel is sad to be a great influence of George du Maurier's Trilby. It was in 1911 that the novel was translated in English.
The novel talks about a man named Erik, also known as the Phantom of the Opera, who is this eccentric, physically deformed genius. He is the one who terrorizes the Opera Garnier. He builds his dwelling underneath it and takes the love of his being, a gorgeous soprano, under his wing.

In addition to the novel that Evey mentioned, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been made into at least three films (including a silent version that is considered a classic horror movie) and a long-running Broadway musical by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
