Oedipus is a mythical kind of Thebes from Ancient Greek. His was a character that killed his father and married his mother and brought disaster on his city and his family.

When Oedipus was born, an Oracle told his parents King Laius and Queen Jocasta that he would murder his father and marry his mother. The king has his feet bound together with a stake and gave him to a herdsman and told him to kill him. The herdsman gave him to another herdsman who gave him to King of Corinth, Polybus. He found out about his adopted and the prophecy when he grew up and set out in search of his parents.

On his way, he killed King Laius over a dispute without his knowing that he was his father. And by answering a riddle he was appointed as the king of Thebes. He was given the hand of Queen Jocasta who was recently widowed.

They had four children together. A plague struck his city and he took guidance from an oracle, who told him to find the killers of the king. In this process, he and everyone else discovered that he was the son of the king and Queen and the prophecy was completed. The Queen killed himself. And he took broaches from her gown and gouged his eyes. This made him blind and he wandered through the country and died at Colonus.
