What Does Observation Mean?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Observation means "studying or watching with scrutiny." The difference between a mere act of seeing and observation is the same as the difference between hearing and listening. While observing, the mind is involved just like it is involved while listening. A person tries to measure, analyse, scrutinize or study as he sees or watches a particular object, animal, place or a person. An act of mere sight does not involve the mind really trying to analyse or study what is being watched.

Also, another meaning of observation is a "remark which expresses a careful thought." The observation, inference or a judgement in this regard is made out of noting or recording a phenomenon or a certain action. For instance: The meteorological division of the city made an observation that the extent of rains was more compared to the previous year.  It is understood that the word made its entry into popular English literature in the year 1320.
